Atomos Sumo 19": HDR Accurate Without the Big Budget

4K Video and HDRAtomos’ Sumo 19” monitor is here to help in the transition to a focus on HDR and 4K video. They’re here to guide you all the way through from the start of a shoot and monitoring to colour grading or editing. This solidifies your workflow, meaning that you won’t see a difference in colour as you potentially have to switch between workstations during a project.

Quad SDI and HDMI 2.0The Sumo comes with Quad SDI (1.5/3G/6G/12G) which allows you to connect multiple cameras without the need for converters. With HDMI 2.0, you get 4K60 and the option to use it on your workstation, allowing you to continue the project without ever leaving the monitor behind. This also gives you access to Genlock and LTC timecode.

Live Recording, Streaming and more

Live Switch with TransitionsWith the options for multiple SDI inputs and outputs, you can switch and mix a live recording, with the option to stream or record the feeds that you have connected in. The feeds can be switched with different transitions, giving you a smooth and professional output without much effort needed on any part.

XLR Input XLR inputs are on the back, making the Atomos fantastic for setting up extra microphones. This gives you a back up in case anything goes wrong along the way.

Ingest footage without another machine Because of its many inputs and built in recording, the Atomos Sumo is fantastic for ingesting footage into your workflow. Recording straight onto a 2.5" hard drive that just ejects from the side (allowing you to use consumer level hardware), you can alleviate a machine to capture older footage into your chosen codec or capture a live source directly for later use.

An Incredible Screen

Brightness The monitor itself is incredibly bright at 1200nits and is full HD, at 1920x1080. This makes it perfect for recording Rec709 outdoor footage. The Sumo can be recalibrated once the passage of time starts to set in and after several uses, original settings could be lost. Using a calibration tool (sold separately), you can plug it into the monitor’s built in input.

HDRHigh Dynamic Range, the technique of reproduce a greater dynamic range of luminosity in footage or photos, is the way the industry is moving. The issue with it is, is that getting a true HDR Grading monitor can cost thousands of pounds more than the Atomos Sumo. While you won’t get an HDR effect as accurate to the tiniest pixel that these monitors can pull off, the Sumo more than makes up for it in being a low cost, full HD screen that is incredibly accurate in grading HDR that other monitors at this price range can’t even begin to compare to.

How it Records

Easy Access The Atomos Sumo connects to your camera via your chosen input, then after adjusting the settings it takes over as your main recording device. On DSLRs, this will circumvent the limits for 30-minute recording and when paired with a camera such as the GH5S, EVA1 or URSA Mini Pro, it’ll force them all into one encoding option, like Apple ProRes, so that when you ingest it into your workflow, you won’t have to worry about various codecs halting progress.

When paired with other Atomos monitors, like the Ninja Flame or Shogun Inferno on a shoot, the similar interface and features means that whatever they’ve captured can be displayed on the Sumo.

Effectively becoming part of the camera itself, it acts as an incredibly accurate, basic colour graded version of what the camera is capturing, giving you an immediate idea of what sort of light you’re shooting in and what your colours will look like once fully edited.

10-bit LCD Panel All this is thanks to the LCD panel’s 10-bit display, which is driven by the AtomHDR engine. This maps the Log/PQ/HLG from a variety of sources to resolve 10+ stops of HDR in real time. You can then go into captured footage and alter this on the fly once you’re done.

On the back, you can equip a mount to the screen, which then can also fit either Gold Mounted or V Mounted batteries. The screen comes with two feet to perch it on your desk and it’s rugged enough to ride with the rest of your equipment without much worry for damage.

Scan Pro Video Recommends

The Panasonic GH5S is the latest camera from Panasonic and is absolutely amazing. It records in 4K, with Dual ISOs and advanced sensor, you just can't miss out on it. The Copilot will actually plug into it and transfer everything off it, so you can get back to filming really quickly.

When it comes to editing, you need something fast and not just blazing fast, but Thunderbolt 3's 40Gbps fast. Transfer whole 4K filming sessions over in minutes rather than hours with the LaCie 2big Dock, which has a huge amount of storage, charges your devices and will take those SD Cards directly, leaving slots and USB ports free from dongles. The best thing about this, is that you can plug in our third recommendation, the Copilot Boss, directly into it too. The Copilot Boss is the best companion for those out and about, as it’ll transfer and keep the footage you record safe and sound in its rugged design. All that and you won’t need a laptop whatsoever.
