Ryzen performance for your studioThe 3XS “Sofa” system is a collaboration with DLR and the Sofa Sound Bristol collective, to maximise the available audio processing power for their bass heavy electronic music production and enable them to produce their own social video content with ease.

As with all 3XS audio systems it is designed to maximise audio processing power and low latency performance combined for the lowest possible noise levels. All components used in the system have been tested in our development labs and have been selected to maximise the audio processing efficiency of the workstation, to give more usable power before the audio breaks up with the dreaded clicks and pops you might have experienced before.

The system features an AMD Ryzen™ 9 5950X CPU OEM. An ideal audio computer system will have both a fast clock and turbo speed (the increase in speed of certain cores when required), alongside many cores and threads. With 32 threads running above a 4GHz average clock speed (dependent on load), this delivers fantastic performance in every modern DAW, especially with power hungry virtual synths, instruments and DSP plugins. System RAM for your softwareThe system has 32GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 Memory, which is normally ample for electronic music production, as producers tend to be more reliant on audio tracks, virtual synths and short samples than running a large quantity of memory hungry multi-sampled orchestral libraries that a composer would use. The system has two free RAM slots for easy upgrades in the future can be upgraded to a total of 128GB RAM if you suddenly get a film score commission.

The 3600MHz RAM selected for this system is specifically optimised for Ryzen systems and through the testing process done by Scan’s DAW expert, Pete, it produced over 20% increased processing power at low latencies compared to standard 3200MHz DDR4 modules

Your OS and applications driveFor the OS drive, we include a super quick Samsung 970 Pro 500GB NVMe drive for your Windows installation and audio applications, which should have plenty of space to host your sequencer of choice as well as your plugins. The Samsungs are a 3XS favourite for reliability, whilst making the computer feel very responsive with super quick boot and load times for applications.

For hosting your samples and librariesAlongside that OS drive, we have 2TB Crucial SSD, perfect for your projects and sound libraries in order to speed up load times and your instrument browsing compared to a mechanical drive.

Should you also wish to migrate over your old project drives or if you want to just ensure that you will be able to add in additional storage in the future, then rest assured that this system has a second NVME slot and 6 SATA drive connections making it certain to be able to accommodate all those too.

Cooling and Acoustic Management

Keeping your system cool and quietAll 3XS audio systems have been sepcified to minimise case noise from the cooling sysstem, to leave your studio as quiet as possible, for effectiver monitoring as well as giving you the ability to record vocals and instruments in the same room if you need to, even with a fairly heavy project.

The 3XS Sofa System uses a Fractal Design case with sound dampened steel panels on the Front, Sides and top of the unit. The case’s stock fans are replaced with a pair of our top performing 140mm fans, the BeQuiet Silent Wings 3, moving air from the front to the rear of the case, so what little fan noise remains is directed away from your work area. This combination, together another silent wings 3 fan fitted on the Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler maintains the best performance to noise ratio that we can achieve. The system should be almost inaudable at low track counts, with the fans gradually ramping up as the processor load increases, with them maximising the cooling when exporting your final mix.

On top of this, the two drives are both solid state and silent and the graphics card is silent in DAW applications, which you can find out more below.

I/O Connections for your peripheralsWith the inclusion of the ASRock Thunderbolt expansion card, offering dual 40Gb/s thunderbolt 3 ports it opens up the option of using one of the top performing audio interfaces such as the Universal Audio Apollo X, PreSonus Quantum or RME UFX+. There are also 6 10Gb/s USB 3.2 gen 1 ports on the rear panel with additional 4 USB-A and a USB-C port on the top panel offering a wealth of connections for all of your studio gear.

Networking connectivity includes both gigabit ethernet and dual band Wi-Fi and for additional internal expansion there is also a free PCIe 4.0 16x slot and two PCIe 4.0 1x slots are accessible.

Display screens and connectionsThe Gigabyte GTX 1650 Super graphics card is also optimised for noise levels, with it being silent and passively cooled in DAW and other non graphics heavy applications, but with the power at its fingertips if you need to edit video footage or produce visual effects.

It’s windforce fans rotate in opposite directions to reduce turbulance and increase heat dispersion efficincy so are best in class for noise when you do require graqphics power. This can support multiple 4K monitors, with 3 dsiplayport 1.4 outputs plus HDMI 2.0b. One displayport output can also be sent over thunderbolt via the rear panel input.

Optimisation

Optimzed for AudioAll of our audio systems are optimized in both the BIOS and Windows itself in order to ensure you get the best from your system. The core of this optimization is minimising DPC (Deferred Procedure Call) latency, which is a measurement of how long it takes for your audio to gain access to and then fully process your ASIO audio buffer.

Windows itself allows up to a 1000μs (microseconds) for each driver to process a cycle, whereas audio requirements state that we need the entire stack of software to process in less than 1000μs. This means if we have 20 plus programs and drivers looking to run, then anything that is poorly implemented may cause us problems, possibly manifesting as an audio overloading causing audio to break-up far earlier than it otherwise should.

All of our audio systems receive extended testing before leaving the factory, specifically testing them for possibility of CPU overloading and ensuring that you have plenty of overhead for your projects.

Processors to Power your PC

The CPU choice for your system is another important decision for your recording setup, as this where your processing performance comes from when it comes to writing and recording music. Audio handling works on a buffer system where the data is captured in a regular cycle and passed over to the CPU to carry out the important work, meaning that as long as everything is processed before the next buffer fills up then everything great.

When the CPU fails to completely process all that data before the next buffer fills up, this is when we experience crackling in our audio signal. The general advice has always been that fast cores are important for audio work and to a degree this is very true, although once we have a number of chips running at roughly the same speed, then it switches to having more cores being better as that means that you can handle more channels overall.

Modern D.A.W software tends to be able to handle an ever growing number of cores with even the most basic of programs now being able to handle 12 cores (24 threads) and the vast majority of them can effectively manage 16 cores (32 threads) without issue. It is always worth checking what your D.A.W software of choice can handle effectively, as this will allow you to optimize best choice in matching your hardware to your software’s abilities.

Here in Scan we test and compare our available CPUs using the DAWBench testing suite, so we can understand the performance differences between these chips. You may not always need the highest performing machine in the range and for many smaller acts working largely with audio and perhaps only a few dozen channels may find one of our entry-level machines extremely effective for the task in hand.

The DAWBench DSP chart below shows the result of adding multiple instances of the SGA 1566 effect, stacked on a project until the audio starts to crackle as the CPU begins to overload. This gives us a baseline metric to compare the CPU’s against each other and a rough guide to how each system will compare against other solutions. We measure at a number of buffer settings using our RME Babyface so that you can see how it may handle in both low latency-recording situations, as well as more relaxed buffer settings that you might use whilst mixing.
